Abu Dhabi court told of cocaine hidden in shampoo

An airline passenger has gone on trial accused of smuggling cocaine in shampoo boxes and bottles of wine.

Abu Dhabi Criminal Court heard the Lebanese passenger was stopped at Abu Dhabi International Airport in April 2014 as he tried to smuggle almost 100g of cocaine. Prosecutors said the man flew in from Sao Paulo, Brazil, on his way to Lebanon. Security agents spotted the man showing signs of “confusion and discomfort” and searched his baggage.
Officers said cocaine had been hidden in two shampoo packs and two wine bottles. The man admitted to carrying the items but denied knowing they contained drugs. He said a man in Sao Paulo had asked him to deliver the packages to his brother in Lebanon.
His lawyer told court that the man was innocent. The trial was adjourned until July 17.
